Pisa Sleep Award
A biennial prize for a scientist whose career has advanced our understanding of sleep, its physiology and its disorders. Seventeen editions, from Michel Jouvet in 1994 to Peter Achermann in 2026.

Thirty years of sleep science in PisaTrent'anni di scienza del sonno a Pisa
The Pisa Sleep Award was created in 1994 by Piero Salzarulo and Luigi Murri. It was first presented at the congress of the European Sleep Research Society in Florence, and in its early years it travelled with the ESRS congresses. It is now held in Pisa every two years, promoted by the Pisa Sleep Center and the School of Medicine of the University of Pisa.
An international committee chooses the laureate, who receives the award in a public ceremony and gives the keynote lecture. Since 2014 the award has been paired with the 11 Minutes of Sleep symposium.

The 2026 award went to Peter Achermann, Professor emeritus at the University of Zurich, for turning the two-process model of sleep regulation into a quantitative tool. The laudatio was given by Vladyslav Vyazovskiy.
The laureateIl premiato
Trained as an electrical engineer, Achermann joined Alexander Borbély's sleep laboratory at the Institute of Pharmacology in Zurich in 1983 and moved into research two years later. He went on to lead the Human Sleep Laboratory of the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology and, until 2021, was scientific director of The KEY Institute for Brain-Mind Research.
With Borbély he built the mathematical model that reproduces how EEG slow-wave activity builds up across waking and dissipates across the night and after sleep deprivation, the curve drawn at the top of this page. His later work covers slow oscillations below 1 Hz, the development of the sleep EEG in children and adolescents, cerebral blood flow during non-REM sleep and the automatic detection of microsleep.

11 Minutes of Sleep
The scientific meeting held with the award. Each speaker has eleven minutes to defend a provocative position on a core question of basic or clinical sleep research. The panel then has nine minutes to argue back, the speaker replies, and each session closes with questions from the floor.
